Nine is the largest single-digit odd number, making it the most intensely <span class=\"lang-zh-TW\">\u967d<\/span><span class=\"lang-zh-CN\">\u9633<\/span> y\u00e1ng number there is. The ninth day of the ninth month stacks two of them together. Hence <span class=\"term\"><span class=\"lang-zh-TW\">\u91cd\u967d<\/span><span class=\"lang-zh-CN\">\u91cd\u9633<\/span> ch\u00f3ngy\u00e1ng<\/span>, &#8220;double yang&#8221; or &#8220;doubled sunlight.&#8221;<\/p>\n      <p>That much <span class=\"lang-zh-TW\">\u967d<\/span><span class=\"lang-zh-CN\">\u9633<\/span> energy was traditionally seen as a little dangerous, almost too intense. Many of the day&#8217;s customs grew out of that idea. One day, his master gave him a warning. On the ninth day of the ninth month, disaster would strike his home village in the form of a plague demon.<\/p>\n        <p>F\u00e8i Ch\u00e1ngf\u00e1ng gave him a plan. Hu\u00e1n J\u01d0ng should lead his family up a nearby mountain. Each person should wear a sachet of <span class=\"term\"><span class=\"lang-zh-TW\">\u8331\u8438<\/span><span class=\"lang-zh-CN\">\u8331\u8438<\/span> zh\u016by\u00fa<\/span>, dogwood, and drink a cup of <span class=\"term\"><span class=\"lang-zh-TW\">\u83ca\u82b1\u9152<\/span><span class=\"lang-zh-CN\">\u83ca\u82b1\u9152<\/span> j\u00fahu\u0101ji\u01d4<\/span>, chrysanthemum wine.<\/p>\n        <p>Hu\u00e1n J\u01d0ng followed the instructions exactly. When the family came back down that evening, they found all their livestock dead. The demon had struck as promised, and taken the animals in their place. The family themselves were untouched.<\/p>\n        <p>That story is why, to this day, people still climb to high places.
