It&#8217;s the day the gates of the underworld are said to swing open, letting spirits wander freely among the living.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <section class=\"block\" id=\"intro\">\n      <div class=\"kicker\">Two religions, one festival<\/div>\n      <h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_%E4%B8%AD%E5%85%83%E7%AF%80%E4%B8%AD%E5%85%83%E8%8A%82\"><\/span>What is <span class=\"lang-zh-TW\">\u4e2d\u5143\u7bc0<\/span><span class=\"lang-zh-CN\">\u4e2d\u5143\u8282<\/span> ?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n      <p>In English it&#8217;s usually called the <strong>Ghost Festival<\/strong> or the <strong>Hungry Ghost Festival<\/strong>. The name changes depending on who&#8217;s celebrating. Taoists call it <span class=\"lang-zh-TW\">\u4e2d\u5143\u7bc0<\/span><span class=\"lang-zh-CN\">\u4e2d\u5143\u8282<\/span> zh\u014dngyu\u00e1nji\u00e9, tied to a heavenly official who pardons the dead on this day. Buddhists call it <span class=\"term\"><span class=\"lang-zh-TW\">\u76c2\u862d\u76c6\u7bc0<\/span><span class=\"lang-zh-CN\">\u76c2\u5170\u76c6\u8282<\/span> Y\u00fal\u00e1np\u00e9n ji\u00e9<\/span>, the Ullambana Festival. It&#8217;s rooted in a story about a monk saving his mother from suffering in the afterlife. Both traditions landed on the same date, and folk practice today blends them freely.<\/p>\n    <\/section>\n\n    <section class=\"block\" id=\"month\">\n      <div class=\"kicker\">A month, not just a day<\/div>\n      <h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E9%AC%BC%E6%9C%88%E9%AC%BC%E6%9C%88_%E2%80%94_Ghost_Month\"><\/span><span class=\"lang-zh-TW\">\u9b3c\u6708<\/span><span class=\"lang-zh-CN\">\u9b3c\u6708<\/span>  \u2014 Ghost Month<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n      <p>Unlike most festivals on this site, <span class=\"lang-zh-TW\">\u4e2d\u5143\u7bc0<\/span><span class=\"lang-zh-CN\">\u4e2d\u5143\u8282<\/span> zh\u014dngyu\u00e1nji\u00e9 isn&#8217;t really about one day. In Taiwan especially, the entire seventh lunar month is treated as <span class=\"term\"><span class=\"lang-zh-TW\">\u9b3c\u6708<\/span><span class=\"lang-zh-CN\">\u9b3c\u6708<\/span> gu\u01d0yu\u00e8<\/span>, &#8220;Ghost Month.&#8221; The gates of the underworld are believed to open on the first day. They close again on the last, giving spirits a full month of freedom before returning.<\/p>\n      <p>Among those spirits are <span class=\"term\"><span class=\"lang-zh-TW\">\u9913\u9b3c<\/span><span class=\"lang-zh-CN\">\u997f\u9b3c<\/span> \u00e8gu\u01d0<\/span>, &#8220;hungry ghosts.&#8221; These are spirits with no living descendants to look after them, wandering hungry and unattended. The 15th is the peak of the month. Spirits should be able to wash up before eating \u2014 the same basic hospitality you&#8217;d offer any guest, ghost or otherwise.<\/p>\n        <p><strong>If you work in a Taiwanese office:<\/strong> it&#8217;s common for an entire office building to gather on the ground floor at a set time. Together, everyone holds <span class=\"lang-zh-TW\">\u666e\u6e21<\/span><span class=\"lang-zh-CN\">\u666e\u6e21<\/span> p\u01d4d\u00f9. If you&#8217;re a manager posted to Taiwan from abroad, choosing not to join is entirely your religious freedom.
