It&#8217;s the one night a year when two star-crossed lovers are said to cross the Milky Way and reunite.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <section class=\"block\" id=\"intro\">\n      <div class=\"kicker\">A festival of stars<\/div>\n      <h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_%E4%B8%83%E5%A4%95%E4%B8%83%E5%A4%95\"><\/span>What is <span class=\"lang-zh-TW\">\u4e03\u5915<\/span><span class=\"lang-zh-CN\">\u4e03\u5915<\/span>?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n      <p>You&#8217;ll see it called a few different things in English. Common names include the <strong>Qixi Festival<\/strong>, the <strong>Double Seventh Festival<\/strong> (a literal translation of the date), the <strong>Magpie Festival<\/strong>, and \u2014 most often today \u2014 <strong>Chinese Valentine&#8217;s Day<\/strong>. All of them trace back to the same legend. Two lovers are separated by a river of stars, and allowed to meet just once a year.<\/p>\n    <\/section>\n\n    <section class=\"block\" id=\"legend\">\n      <div class=\"kicker\">The story behind it<\/div>\n      <h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E7%89%9B%E9%83%8E%E7%B9%94%E5%A5%B3%E7%89%9B%E9%83%8E%E7%BB%87%E5%A5%B3_Niulang_Zhinu\"><\/span><span class=\"lang-zh-TW\">\u725b\u90ce\u7e54\u5973<\/span><span class=\"lang-zh-CN\">\u725b\u90ce\u7ec7\u5973<\/span> Ni\u00fal\u00e1ng Zh\u012bn\u01da<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n      <p><span class=\"lang-zh-TW\">\u7e54\u5973<\/span><span class=\"lang-zh-CN\">\u7ec7\u5973<\/span> Zh\u012bn\u01da, the Weaver Girl, was a fairy who wove the clouds for the Queen Mother of Heaven. Then she fell in love with <span class=\"lang-zh-TW\">\u725b\u90ce<\/span><span class=\"lang-zh-CN\">\u725b\u90ce<\/span> Ni\u00fal\u00e1ng, a mortal cowherd, and secretly came down to marry him.<\/p>\n      <div class=\"callout\">\n        <p><strong>So \u2014 how did they actually meet?<\/strong> Here&#8217;s where the story gets a little uncomfortable by modern standards. In the older, traditional telling, Zh\u012bn\u01da came down to bathe in a lake. Ni\u00fal\u00e1ng spotted her and stole her fairy robe so she couldn&#8217;t fly home. Then he told her she had to marry him. With no way home, she reluctantly agreed, and only grew to love him over time. Told plainly, that&#8217;s a kidnapping.<\/p>\n        <p>Most versions told today have quietly rewritten this part. Instead, an ox snags Zh\u012bn\u01da&#8217;s robe by accident, and Ni\u00fal\u00e1ng simply helps her get it back. It&#8217;s a meet-cute instead of a coercion \u2014 and how the two end up together in the version most people learn now.<\/p>\n      <\/div>\n      <p>They lived happily for years and had two children. Then the Queen Mother discovered the truth and dragged Zh\u012bn\u01da back to the heavens.<\/p>\n      <p>Ni\u00fal\u00e1ng chased after her, wearing his ox-hide cloak, his two children carried in baskets over his shoulders. Just as he was about to catch up, the Queen Mother scratched a line across the sky with her hairpin. It tore open into a vast, uncrossable river \u2014 the Milky Way, known in Chinese as <span class=\"term\"><span class=\"lang-zh-TW\">\u5929\u6cb3<\/span><span class=\"lang-zh-CN\">\u5929\u6cb3<\/span> ti\u0101nh\u00e9<\/span>, the &#8220;Silver River.&#8221;<\/p>\n      <div class=\"callout\">\n        <p>Moved by their devotion, the Queen Mother allowed them one exception. Once a year, on the seventh day of the seventh month, a flock of magpies flies up to form a bridge \u2014 <span class=\"term\"><span class=\"lang-zh-TW\">\u9d72\u6a4b<\/span><span class=\"lang-zh-CN\">\u9e4a\u6865<\/span> qu\u00e8qi\u00e1o<\/span>, the &#8220;Magpie Bridge.&#8221; It lets the two cross the river and spend one night together.<\/p>\n        <p>Some tellings add a bittersweet detail. If it rains on <span class=\"lang-zh-TW\">\u4e03\u5915<\/span><span class=\"lang-zh-CN\">\u4e03\u5915<\/span>, it&#8217;s said to be the lovers&#8217; tears of joy at reunion. Since Zh\u012bn\u01da was a master weaver, girls prayed to her for skill in needlework and household crafts.
